Some of them I get, some of them I don’t. But reading Genshiken manga again this morning brought me to the picture on the left. Vol 2 Page 75, when Sasahara said that Madarame got the rare Kujian trading card, a very distinct sound effect was used. The “ざわ” (zawa) of Kaiji fame. I am not an expert in Japanese, so I can’t say that Kaiji is the first manga to have used ざわ as a sound effect for suspense. But the ざわ used in Genshiken is in a very specific font, that made me quite sure that it is a parody of the Kaiji ざわ. Genshiken started in 2002, and Kaiji 1996. The timing is correct too.

Just 1 column, really makes me appreciate how much thought and effort was put into the making of Genshiken. So sad that the second season of the anime failed to come to a satisfactory ending like the manga…

In Japan, apparently the number of kids/people who play Go increased significantly after the manga was released. I call it a conspiracy. Like Prince of Tennis, Slam Dunk, Eye Shield 21, and Captain Tsubasa, Hikaru no Go is probably one of those sports manga that is brainwashing the kids in Japan to do things other than reading manga. Considering Shounen Jump is the best-selling manga magazine out there, maybe the Japanese government has a secret contract with Jump that requires the magazine to publish at least one brain-washing, good-for-the-kids’-body-and-mind type manga in every issue…

Okay, maybe not… But Hikaru no Go did a great job promoting Go, even outside of Japan. I still remember that when I was in high school (English boarding school), some local Go club people came and gave a short presentation on Go, showed a few episodes of Hikaru no Go (emphasizing and apologizing for the cussing words fansubbers used), and generated enough interest that a Go club was formed by me and some upper and lower-third form boys. Of course I knew about Hikaru no Go loooong before the presentation. Too bad the club disintegrated when our supervising teacher moved away. Those were some good times.

Anyways, Hikaru and Akira made playing Go look 1000 times more cool than it really is. Just observe your friends play a game of chess. Go might look all exotic and strange to your non-asian/otaku friends, but seriously, you probably look just as cool (lame?) as you are playing a game of chess… Okay, maybe I am just bitter because I fail at playing any RTS game (tear)… Go is actually super cool! Please teach me how to hold the Go stones like a real pro~~~

I rant too much.

Since I am a true otaku, I can’t help but wonder if the games in Hikaru no Go is actually based off anything. I mean, making a basketball game or football game look super exciting is probably much easier than making up Go moves and make a board-game look legit and exciting… But since I am not the only otaku, there is someone who did all my research for me already. Mr Ooijer from My Friday Night Files apparently looked up many of the games from both the manga and anime, found the origin of the games in real life, and made a database with the game data. If you read Mr Ooijer’s blog, you will see that he is an IT professional and the President of the Dutch Go Association since 1997. And he said:

“Mr Ooijer is the name of the Dutch Go Association’s President in the Manga Hikaru no Go. That is why I blog under that name.”

—Jan van Rongen

The world is an interesting place.

Just a side note: the picture in this post is a screen cap from episode 66 of the anime, and according to Friday Night Files, still does not have an origin yet. And, please don’t go to the games database if you have not read/watch the manga/anime. One of my most painful memories was when I was waiting for the last few chapters of Hikaru no Go, I found My Friday Night Files. Because the last game played by Hikaru and Ko Yongha is relatively new and well-known, the site already found the origin and posted it… So I actually knew the outcome of the game BEFORE the manga was released. It was quite traumatic…. >_>

When I was the moderator for Yelu’s manga discussion board (now dormant), I used to ask 1 question/day for members to earn points. The Going Merry question was one of the S-rank questions, and I started out by searching for the answer myself.

In the old days, One Piece was not as popular. And there was this one website that posted about a possible real-life model for Going Merry. I found it and used the picture on the left as the cIue to my question. A few days ago, I found this picture laying in the depths of my photobucket album. With the help of tineye.com, I was able to find this model again, which Woody Joe calls “Catalonia”: a model dedicated to church near Barcelona . In existence oldest sailer model.

Here is where it gets interesting. Going Merry has always been classified as a caravel class vessel. But if the Going Merry was modeled after the “Catalonia” , then its classification will not be as clear. In fact, Catalonia is the oldest surviving model of either a caravel or a nao, and the distinction between a caravel and naos i apparently never clear anyways.

Woody Joe calls the model “Catalonia” probably because the model is a votive model from a Catalonian church. However, the more correct name for the model is actually Het Matarómodel, since the church is more specifically located in Mataro. The original model can now be found in the Maritime Museumin Rotterdam. I think the Woody Joe model looks like a good replica of the original model.

Lets look at Going Merry, notice the placement of the blelaying pin on the sides of the hull to be almost identical to the Mataromodel? The anchor also seems to have a similar release mechanism and is stowed at the same position as the model. Heck, Going Merry and the Mataromodel just looks alike. The curvature of the hull of Going Merry seems to be more round than ellipsoidal; it is square-rigged on the mainmast and lateen-rigged on the mizzenmast, which wikipedia says is more indicative of a nao. But some caravels that were made later seemed to have adapted the same rigging as the nao… And i can go on and on and on… And I think the official word is that Going Merry is a caravel. Period. So if you are interested, please read the links to see what differentiates a caravel from a nao.

The Going Merry does have a mizzenmast, which is different from the Mataromodel. But some research will show that the Mataromodel is one of the only artifacts from the 15th century that really demonstrated how a caravel or nao was rigged and built. Actually, now I think about it, even though I don’t know much about sailing (despite having taken an intro to sailing class for a semester), Going Merry seems to be not navigable at all… Is it just me or there are no sheets/ braces on the main sail? How are you going to control the main mast? Does it depend solely on the lateen-rigging and the rudder? I guess Nami is a much, much better sailor than I though she was… Okay, I know it is probably because drawing all those $%@!&#$%^ rigging on the ship will make it look super messy.

Anyways, I don’t know how much of a ship builder Eiichiro Oda is, but if he actually referenced anything during his creation of Going Merry, my best guess would be the Mataromodel. No matter what, I personally think that the Mataromodel is much more like the “real” Going Merry than the japanese replica of the live-action(?) Going Merry in Odaiba…. (I still think it is super cool though >_>)

The snake shape on Edward’s jacket is one of the most recognizable symbols from FMA, not only does it appear on Edward’s red jacket, the author also used it on the back cover of tankobon, the start of chapters, and many other places. So I started to wonder about the meaning of such a symbol.

When I first saw the snake, my first association was the World Health Organization（>_>). Sidetracking, the logo for WHO was decided at the 1948’s first conference of the organization. The flag of the World Health Organization is identical to the UN flag, with a Rod of Asclepius added. The rod of Asclepius is an ancient Greek symbol associated with astrology, and with healing the sick through medicine. It consists of a serpent entwined around a staff. According to Greek mythology, Asclepius was said to have learned the art of healing from Chiron. He is customarily represented as a surgeon on the ship Argo. Asclepius was so skilled in the medical arts that he was reputed to have brought patients back from the dead. For this, he was punished and placed in the heavens as the constellation Ophiuchus (meaning “serpent-bearer”). (thanks wikipedia…)

“Brought patients back from the dead”，sounds familiar? That’s why my first thought was that the Elric brother’s trying to bring their mother back from the dead, and also healing Edward’s arm and Alphonse’s body. So I thought the rod of Rod of Asclepius is a very good inspiration for Edward’s symbol. Especially when the Rod of Asclepius can be seen and understood easily by everyone. That’s what I thought at first…

But there is a flaw with my theory. The Rod of Asclepius is a snake around a stick, not a cross, not to mention with some random wings and crown on top of that. I was tempted to assume that the author (female) added those elements for aesthetic reasons. Okay, I read too much Clamp… Crosses, wings, crowns… Sounds familiar? Useless symbolism? But! Some light research on alchemy shows how wrong I was. I guess Hiromu Arakawa definitely did her research(?).

If you read/watched Harry Potter, you might remeber Nicolas Flamel. He is the creator of the Philosopher’s stone in the first book. Since Nicholas Flamel is a real person(?), he has a journal with some very familiar images:Page 3 and Page 13. That’s right, the lift side of Page 3 shows a snake twining itself on a cross, with a crown on top of it. Page 13 has the wings on the staff. The symbol on Edward’s jacket resembles much closer to Nicolas Flamel’s notebook than the Rod of Asclepius. Though Flamel’s notebook drawings are probably inspired partly by Rod of Asclepius and has some sort of special alchemical meaning. But the story of Nicholas Flamel also fits perfectly with FMA, since the Elric brothers was seeking the philosopher’s stone for the whole time.

Though these are just my own speculations… Maybe she did just come up with it on a whim?
